In this guide, you’ll learn how to connect Afterpay to your TimelyPay terminal and start offering flexible payment options to your clients. To find out more about Afterpay and how it works with Timely, check out our How to take payments using Afterpay guide.
Important note: Afterpay is currently only supported in New Zealand and Australia, and is in-store only.
Get your Afterpay merchant ID
Before proceeding, ensure you’ve registered with Afterpay and received your unique Merchant ID.
If you’re purchasing a new TimelyPay terminal, it can be added at the time of purchase.
Otherwise, just contact Timely Support and provide your Merchant ID - and they can set it up for you.
Timely note: The activation process may take up to 10 days to complete, with the possibility of being sooner. You will receive an email directly from Afterpay once it has been finalised.
Understanding scanner behaviour
After an update, linking Afterpay no longer triggers a barcode reader. Now, when Afterpay is selected:
The sale is simply logged in Timely as a custom payment type, similar to credit or debit transactions.
You will still process the payment using your physical card reader - just like other card payments.
What to expect during payment
Clients with the Afterpay app can use their virtual card (Apple/Google wallet) or the Afterpay Card to tap and pay - just like any contactless transaction. The terminal treats it like a regular card tap.
Quick Tips & Best Practices
Team Training: Let your staff know that Afterpay works like a regular card tap—no barcode scanning involved.
Test Setup: If unsure, run a trial payment or ask Support to confirm setup.
Client Communication: Promote Afterpay options via your social and email channels to boost uptake.
Important Note: Your Timely x AfterPay integration can only be configured after your first transaction with TimelyPay has been successfully processed.
Timely note: Timely customer support can help you with setting up Afterpay on your TimelyPay Terminal. If you are using a 3rd party terminal, then you will need to either record the sale as a credit card or create a custom payment type called 'Afterpay'. For guidance on creating a custom payment type, see our help guide here.
