Getting started with Timely, mPOP and Smartpay

Note: To make sure you get the very best app experience, you'll need to have the latest version of IOS installed on your phone/iPad. 

In this getting started guide, we'll cover everything you need to get your front counter set up with Timely.

What you will need

  1. An iPhone or iPad that is running iOS11 or later and has the following apps installed:
    1. Timely iOS app (Link to App Store).
    2. mPOP Utility app (Link to App Store).
    3. (Optional) A lightning to USB cable to charge the iPad.
  2. The mPOP cash drawer and printer with the following accessories: 

  3. Your Smartpay terminal which includes the terminal base unit, Ethernet/Phone cable and Power Supply (Items may differ between models).

  4. You will need to have a Merchant account set up with Smartpay and have connected your terminal to the Paymark network:

    Your terminal will have arrived with a printed receipt still attached. If the receipt is a short receipt with your business name on it, you are now all ready to go.

    If not, you’ll need to call Smartpay before you can connect on 0800 476 278. They will release the security key and perform 
    your initial logon.

  5. Your terminal Admin code - this will give you access to all of the configuration menus of your terminal. To find your admin code, check out the initial documentation or contact Smartpay directly.

  6. To have enabled the Smartpay integration on the Timely desktop site by checking the box next to  Allow iPad and iPhone app to pair with a Smartpay  payment terminal:


Connect the mPOP cash drawer and printer

Next, we'll get the mPOP set up and connected to Timely. Before you can connect the mPOP to your iPad, you'll need to turn it on. You can find the power button on the left-hand side on the front of the machine.

Set up the mPOP

  1. Set up the mPOP on your counter.
  2. Plug in the power cord to the mPOP (Find out more).
  3. Connect the iPad to the mPOP via USB/Lightning cable, using the "tablet USB output" (Find out more):

  4. Load the receipt paper into the mPOP (Find out more).

Pair the mPOP to your iPad

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPad and tap Bluetooth from the menu:
  2. Ensure Bluetooth is turned on. This should be green.If the slider is greyed out, tap again to ensure Bluetooth is enabled:
  3. In the Bluetooth Devices section, tap on the Star mPOP. The mPOP and iPad will then be connected: 

Connect the mPOP to Timely

  1. In the Timely app, go to the Settings page and tap None next to Printers in the Hardware section: 
  2. Tap on the mPOP in the search results to select it.
  3. You'll then be required to configure the printer. You can set the Name, as well as decide to Auto-print, Open on cash payment and Open on sale complete:

  4. Tap  Save to complete the process. The printer will then show up as being connected.

Update the mPOP settings

  1. Open the mPOP Utility app and go to the Bluetooth settings page.
  2. Set the New Pairing Permission to OFF
  3. Set Auto connection to ON (Find out more).
  4. Tap Apply to apply your changes. This will mean that only one device can be connected to the mPOP at a time and will prevent another device from being able to open the cash drawer (Recommended).
  5. You'll be prompted to turn the iPad off and then on again to complete the process.

Connect the Smartpay terminal to Timely

Before you can connect Smartpay to Timely, you will need to set up the terminal.

Set up the Smartpay terminal

  1. Plug the power cable into the POWER socket on the terminal, then plug the other end into the electrical socket.
  2. If you’re using a broadband or fibre internet connection, plug your ethernet cable into the LAN/ port.
  3. Turn on the power at the wall, then push and briefly hold the power button on the terminal. The terminal will start the installation process.
  4. You will then need to connect the terminal to your Wifi. You will see a screen with the following options:
    1. Wifi 
    3. Manually 
    4. Enter Wifi 
    5. Details
  5. If you see this information, push the F1 key on your terminal.  The terminal will then display all the WiFi networks that are in range.
  6. Scroll down (F1) or up (F2) to the network you want the terminal to connect to and press Enter to confirm.
  7. Enter the WPA password for your chosen WiFi network and press Enter.

    Note: To access upper or lower case letters, press the corresponding number key quickly to get the letter you want. To access the key number, press the number key once. If you want to repeat that number or enter a letter that corresponds with the same number, please pause before attempting to choose the character. (For example, key 3 will give you 3DEFdef in that order).

  8. The terminal will then connected to the WiFi and will display the WiFi network name and signal strength, before showing the EFTPOS “ready" screen.

Connect Smartpay to Timely:

  1. On the Timely iOS app, go to the Settings page and tap Printers

  2. Tap Smartpay from the options.  A window will pop up that will ask you to enter the Pairing code that's displayed on the terminal:
  3. Enter the Code on terminal and tap Pair to connect.
  4. The screen with then show up with a Status of Paired. Tap Done to close and return to the settings page.

Now that you have everything connected, it's time to raise a sale and apply a payment to make sure that everything is working.
